Moonrite History

An abridged history of the Moonrite…

It began with a Crone. A Grandmother who was also a Mother, a Daughter, a Warrior, and a Priestess, a great woman with a wealth of ancient knowledge deep within her, who had watched generations of daughters grow to be mothers and grandmothers. She heard the words of so many girls as they reached their moon time, when their bodies began to transform from a child's to a woman's and they cried, "Why? Why am I hurting? Why am I lusting and laughing and crying? Why am I changing?" And she knew that there weren't enough words to explain the power of their womanhood within them, and that the only thing that could teach them was experience.

So the Grandmother went to work, weaving together the stories and traditions and the mysteries that she had learned during her own life. She collected together myths from ancient cultures and countries, power from the Lady's love and wisdom, and great truths from the universal experience of being a young woman. She worked for days and nights and years, building a rite of passage that would introduce girls to the beauty and power within themselves.

Years passed and the Crone continued her work, every year she pushed on to give this Moonrite to more young women. In time she found help from the maidens and the mothers who were blessed by the Grandmother's diligence and who knew it was important to continue giving this gift to the newest maidens. They were the warrior women who stood guard over the sacred Red Tent and the frightened girls inside it, until the morning when they welcomed the wide-eyed women into their Amazon tribe.

And the tribe became more and more involved. They became closer to each other and to the Lady and through their hard work protecting the new Maidens they reconnected with the power their own Rite had given them. They became more than just a tribe. They were grandmothers and daughters and mothers and warriors and singers and storytellers. They were connected to each other by a ribbon of blood and by the power of the Moonrite. They were a Sisterhood.

We continue in this way. Every year, the Sisterhood grows and every year it changes. We welcome the newest members of our Sisterhood, we teach them the traditions that we have learned ourselves. We welcome the newest of our tribe, and ask them to share their own knowledge with us in return.
